2. Prepare textures

1.

Switch it to the view in with U want to add decals (side/front/back etc.) Typically, this is will be the side view.
Left-Click on the small "+" in top left corner of view-port
From drop down menu select ViewCube and set it to Orthographic.

2.
Pan/Scale view to maximize U'r model in it (do not scale model, only the view). Select model, make sure u see whole bounding box of model.
Left-Click on the small "+" in top left corner of view-port
From drop down menu select Create Preview => Create Still Image File..., in pop-up window either give the preview a name or discard window, then in next window save image to a file or simply copy it to clipboard.

3.
Open U'r favorite Graphic Editor (I will use InkScape)
Import Preview Image U did in last step.
Using it as a reference paint U'r decals in new Layer.
Finally in new layer draw a rectangle of same size as bounding box of model in preview, make it in high contrast color by example Green, Blue etc. Then Place it under the decals layer.

Crop image to the size of bounding box and delete the preview image.
Export this texture in U'r favorite non quality loss format (png, tga, etc) we will use it for Diffuse texture of our model to render decals for color layer of skin.

Repeat this step for the opposite side, but flip the decals horizontally...

Why so?
Our texture will be rendered by 3DS as double-side and Decals rendered on one side will be mirrored to opposite side.
Having this in mind for the side decals we will render two texture sets... one set for each side (left and right) with we later Join in post-processing.

4.
Repeat step 11., but fill all decals with 100% white and for the background rectangle of bounding box chose 100 %black

Why so ?
Method with we are using does not render transparency for decals... so we create this texture as B/W and use it for Diffuse texture of our model to render ALPHA OPACITY MASK with we will use in post-processing to easy remove background from decals.

Export this texture in U'r favorite non quality loss format (png, tga, etc).
